Devotion is a Taiwanese game developed by Red Candle Studios. It dives into the haunting story of a family living in 1980s Taiwan, blending psychological horror with cultural and historical themes. Unlike many Western horror games that rely on jump scares, Devotion builds its fear from atmosphere and symbolism, drawing from Taoist rituals, folklore, and the social pressures of Taiwanese society.

When the game was released in 2019, it quickly gained international praise for its artistry and narrative depth. However, controversy erupted after players discovered an in-game poster mocking Chinese president Xi Jinping, comparing him to Winnie the Pooh. As a result, the game was removed from Steam, the world’s largest video game platform, after intense backlash from Chinese players and government pressure.

This incident highlights more than just a banned video game. It raises important questions about censorship, freedom of expression, and the challenges Taiwanese creators face when navigating global markets dominated by China. For many players, Devotion became a symbol of how Taiwanese identity and creativity can be silenced by political pressure.

Yet the game’s story did not end there. Copies of Devotion were preserved in institutions like Harvard University’s library, ensuring it would not be forgotten. This act of preservation demonstrates how cultural products—especially those born from Taiwan—carry significance beyond entertainment. They reflect identity, memory, and the struggle for free expression in a globalized world.

As a Taiwanese-American, learning about Devotion reminded me that culture and politics are deeply intertwined. Even something as simple as a video game can become a battleground for representation and free speech. By amplifying these stories, we not only support Taiwan’s creative industries but also show the world why protecting diverse voices matters.
