Taiwan’s long tradition of paper craftsmanship is being reimagined for the 21st century at the Suho Memorial Paper Museum. In its 30th-anniversary exhibition, “Re/Rooting—Suho 30 · The Future is Ancestral,” the museum, alongside its Fenko Catalysis Chamber, showcases how ancient fibers like abaca (Musa textilis) are transformed into wearable, washable textiles through advanced techniques.

Curated by third-generation heir Lino Lee, the exhibition blends heritage and innovation, following Taiwan’s mastery of paper from centuries-old craft to cutting-edge applications. Abaca, historically used for ropes, sails, and fishing nets, is now reinvented as high-strength paper yarn suitable for clothing and everyday goods. Brands including Balenciaga, COS, and Gervasoni have already incorporated abaca paper yarn into sneakers, shirts, and furniture upholstery.

“Through Taiwan’s washi paper techniques, abaca fiber is processed without chemical additives,” Lee says. “The result is a material that is strong, soft, washable, fully biodegradable, and naturally antibacterial—a modern testament to the versatility of paper.” Some products, like infant wear and socks worn by Japanese astronaut Yamazaki Naoko in space, highlight abaca’s resilience and global appeal.

The Fenko Catalysis Chamber, Suho’s experimental space, pushes these concepts even further. Visitors encounter paper installations that double as art, sustainable textiles, and innovative materials combining rice husks, coffee grounds, and pineapple fibers. One notable creation is a washable coat made entirely from paper fibers, demonstrating that paper can be both functional and fashionable.

Beyond innovation, the museum preserves the cultural and emotional significance of paper. Lee emphasizes that handmade paper carries the imprint of its maker, with each sheet’s texture and irregularities telling a unique story. Fenko invites designers, architects, and artists to explore these materials collaboratively, merging tradition with contemporary creativity.

With this exhibition, the Suho Paper Museum celebrates Taiwan’s legacy in paper while charting a bold future. From historic fibers to sustainable fashion, it illustrates how traditional craftsmanship can adapt, endure, and inspire in a modern, global context.
